Home Sweet...Middle Earth (or, new house inspiration!)

Hello lovely followers, it's been far too long, hasn't it? Needless to say, a lot has happened since last November including a new job, starting my own company, and moving to a new house. Although this blog has gotten a little dusty, these huge changes have inspired me to start pursuing my love of creativity, design, and writing so I hope you will keep reading as I have big plans for D + D.

Now that we have much more space (that actually belongs to us) I have been obsessed with decorating and furnishing our home in a way that represents our style and interests. We have slowly but surely been purchasing new furniture and decor to replace the older stuff we had in our small apartment, which led me straight back to another "Home Sweet" design.

This living room takes its inspiration from three really awesome 50's and 60's inspired Lord of the Rings "travel prints" by artists Steve Thomas and Timothy Anderson (who both incidentally also have tons of other awesome sci-fi/fantasy/comic prints). Since I plan on recreating this in my own living room, I used the wood floors and muted color palette that already exists on the walls and window treatments. I definitely plan on doing a photo shoot once I finish organizing everything.

Winter Wishlist 2012

Even though we are probably not quite done with fall yet, I feel like the freezing cold evening temps are a sign of things quickly to come! We've already started using our fireplace and it's all I can do to hold off on the Christmas decorations. (I think that after Thanksgiving is a TAD more reasonable.) In the meantime, I have put together a "Winter Wish List," that is a little glam (luxurious Diptyque candles!)  and a little geek (Kigu-freaking-rumi!) with a dash of practicality thrown in for good measure (Sorel boots for Virginia rain and snow).

What's on YOUR Winter Wish List?

Eleven

So, for the past few months, those of you that know me know that I have been voraciously devouring the entirety of Doctor Who. I'll be the first to admit that I'm a "NuWho-vian" so the "entirety of Doctor Who" for me starts with the Ninth Doctor, played by the dark and sometimes brooding Christopher Eccleston. When I finished the first (and Eccleston's only) season, I said to myself "This is it!...No one will be able to outdo the Ninth Doctor...He will always be my favorite." Then David Tennant came on the scene with his sightly sillier Doctor, dapper pinstriped suit, and awesome hair. It took me a few episodes, but I ended up loving him with Rose Tyler and it was "ALLONS-Y" for all of seasons two through four. The episodes telling the story of the end of the tenth Doctor's adventures were some of the most well written, well acted moments of television I have ever seen. (I definitely "had something in both of my eyes" during the season five finale.) And of course, when it was all said and done, Ten was my new favorite and there was no WAY the new Doctor would ever change that, especially without Rose, or Martha, or the Doctor Donna.

But sure enough, I gave it a few episodes and Matt Smith and "Eleven" won me over. I'd like to think its the talent of the show's writers that manages to keep me coming back, even when my precious Doctor regenerates.I love the Ponds, I love the new TARDIS and I love River Song because let's face it...River Song is cool.In honor of the new season of Doctor Who, I have put together an Eleven inspired outfit that I think would be perfect for the upcoming fall weather. I say inspired, because I decided to stick with tailored women's clothing and a sweet red statement necklace instead of a bowtie.

We're already two episodes into Season 7 and all I have to say is...GERONIMO!!!!!

Question: Are you a Doctor Who fan? Who is your favorite Doctor?

A Dungeons and Diamonds Summer

Well, with the 106 degree weather predicted for this Saturday, I think summer is officially here! (At least in Virginia.) For a Casper-pale person such as myself, staying cool and preventing sun burns in the blazing heat can be a constant worry but I’ve learned that lots of water and SPF 100 can do wonders for my attitude when running around outdoors. Aside from those basic necessities, I have come up with a few essentials for a very “dungeons and diamonds” summer. Most of these items (along with a never ending supply of fro-yo..mmm...fro-yo) are on my wish list, and I thought they might inspire my readers too.

1. Waterproof iPhone case by Lifeproof- This waterproof case comes in black, pink, purple, and white and would be perfect for taking cool photos or short videos underwater at the beach. A bit expensive at 79.00, but that’s far less than the price of a new iPhone if it were to get dropped in the pool. Available at Lifeproof.

2. Fekkai Summer Hair Cooling Shine Mist- As evidenced by my Instagram (follow me at Starbuckles) photos, I have very long, red hair. In other words, very susceptible to chorine, the sun, sand, and salt water. Most people apply some level of sunscreen to their skin, but your hair needs attention too! This mist touts shine and UV protection. Available at Ulta.

3. Christian Dior Bronzer in 001 Healthy Tan- As I mentioned previously, I am pretty pale. I don’t tan I just burn and get more freckle-y. I see a lot of gorgeous pale folk, (down with skin cancer!) but personally, I think I look better with just a little bit of color. Thanks to a good spray tan and bronzer, I can prevent myself from looking too “walking dead”. I actually have this product and LOVE it. It’s $46.00 but a little goes a long way. I got my compact earlier this year (at Nordstrom’s) and have barely made a dent in it.

4. My Little Pony Rarity Hoodie- Yes, it’s true. I got sucked into the new MLP and frankly, I think it’s adorable and funny (Pinkie Pie makes me LOL). I think this would be super cute over summer basics, or to keep you warm in the frigid AC at the movies. Available at WeLoveFine for $49.00. (Incidentally, check out the rest of their site. Some awesome pop culture tee’s and hoodies.)

5. Comptoir Sud Pacifique “Vanille Abricot”  Eau de Toilette- Summer calls for lighter fragrances (which still get magnified in the heat) and this smells like a tropical vacation. I have the Vanille Peach scent (which is discontinued) and always get complimented on it. Available for $37.00 at Amazon.com.

6. Guayaki “Revel Berry” Yerba Mate- There comes a point when the temperatures start to rise that I switch from hot caffeinated drinks over to cold caffeinated drinks. I was gifted the Toddy Cold Brew system a while back and it is fantastic for making homemade iced coffee. Sometimes though, the coffee jitters or dehydration leave me craving something caffeinated but a little less harsh on my system. Enter Guayaki’s Revel Berry tea. It comes in a large can (much like other energy drinks like Monster) and has as much caffeine as a cup of coffee. From Guayaki’s website: “Mate has the strength of coffee, the health benefits of tea, and the euphoria of chocolate.” Need I say more? The Revel Berry flavor is sweet without being cloying and its definitely refreshing. It also has only 112 calories per giant can. You can order a case of 12 straight from Guayaki (shipping included) for $29.99.

7. Hello Kitty Moustache backpack- I saw this via Fashionably Geek a few weeks back and cannot stop thinking about it. I would throw in a few magazines, a book, sunscreen, and my iPhone to take with me to the pool. Available at NeatoShop for $39.95

8. Striped Fedora- Along with a UV hair spray, a hat is another way to protect your hair, skin, and face from sun damage. I love the idea of a cute fedora which can be worn with a cute sundress or a swimsuit. This pink and white striped version is available at Nordstroms for $18. (I’ve also seen cute options at Forever 21 and Gap.)

9. AppTag Laser Blaster for iPhone, iPod, and Android- Okay, who remembers THIS version of laser tag? My sister and I were huge fans of both the cartoon and the toy that eventually followed. The newest, updated Laser Tag gun has been constructed to be used with your smart phone and a free AppTag application. This would be an awesome to play with in a park with a group of friends. Read more about it here. Available through Hex3 for $60.00. AppTag Laser Blaster orders will be shipped towards the end of August.

10. Doctor Who Police Box Towel- I browsing the internets for a fun beach/pool towel and BEHOLD, the TARDIS towel. Signal the Doctor and you might get a ride. Out of stock currently, but available ~ 6/29 from the fine folks at ThinkGeek for 19.99. FANTASTIC!

11. Jeweled bow flip flops- Let’s face it; flip flops are a summer staple. They come in all colors and styles, and are usually pretty inexpensive. These are no exception. This is another item that I already own, and they are ADORABLE. I bought them both in black and Tiffany blue, and the best part? I got them at Sears for $6.00 each. (Note: They are currently down to $5/piece. At that price, you can buy all of the colors!)

12. Victoria’s Secret Bikini- I happen to love the swimsuits from Victoria’s Secret, especially when they are on sale. VS offers all sorts of styles, from bikinis, to one pieces, to weird things called “monokinis.” I am a big fan of this bright purple and turquoise tie-dye option. The top would also be cute worn under a v neck or scoop neck t shirt. Top and bottom available at Victoria's Secret for $18/piece

Although most of us have full time jobs and other responsibilities that don’t stop during the summer months, that doesn’t meant that you shouldn’t take advantage of the longer daylight hours and opportunities stay up way past your bedtime.

What are YOUR summer essentials?

Home Sweet...Level One

If you ask most people, they usually remember most of their firsts. Their first car (mine spontaneously combusted), their first apartment (I lived with one of my best friends Erin!), and their first pet (an adorable little American Eskimo named Snowy) to name a few. If you're like me, you also remember your first video game. Mine was most definitely Super Mario Bros. for the original Nintendo console.I remember my sister and I bringing it with us to a relative's house and playing non-stop until all the lights were turned out in the house, and we had a bad case of "controller thumbs."

Ever since I found this AMAZING mario question cube light (that turns on when you hit the bottom!!!) on Pinterest, I wanted to do a "Home Sweet" post including it. The light is handmade by 8BitLit who runs an Etsy shop where you can purchase the light fully constructed, or, for slightly less, a kit so you can DIY. I can imagine 2 or 3 of these hanging in a row in a room with exposed brick walls and lots of green and gold accents. I'm even thinking about getting one for my home office, when I start my big office overhaul.

1. Print: Glen Brogan, "The Plumber's Wardrobe" , (here) $9.95
2. Hanging Light: 8BitLit, "Interactive 8 bit Question Block Lamp)"(here) $74.99 ($54.99 DIY)
3. Sloane Ladder Bookshelf: Crate and Barrel, in Espresso, (here) $129.00
4. Gold Chair : Studio Ball  (no longer available- DIY with a plastic lawn chair, primer and gold spray paint!)
5. Rug: CB2, "Par Shag Rug"in Green (here) $199.00
6. Table: Arper, "Dizzy Side Table" in Green and White (here) $365.00
7. Potted Venus Fly Trap plant, (here) $4.99

Just for fun: Check out these Mario Bros. propaganda prints from Fro Design Co. ($150 for set of 9). These would be awesome framed and hung as a statement piece in an office!

Three Questions with Sabrina from Fit.Laugh.Love

I can honestly say that Sabrina is one of the coolest girls I know. I love her enthusiasm for fitness and healthy living, and the encouraging posts over at her blog Fit.Laugh.Love. (Also, the childhood photo of Sabrina showing off her guns wearing TMNT shorts, t-shirt, backback, and My Little Pony sweatbands is pretty much the most epic thing I've seen in a while) And yeah, we have definitely bonded over our love of Doctor Who. She agreed to answer a few of my fitness related questions, and its my hope that some of the answers will inspire you!

Source: Sabrina!

"Hi! I’m Sabrina! I blog over at fitlaughlove.com with a focus on informative content to help inspire people to get off their adorable behinds and get their fitness on. I firmly believe that living healthy doesn’t have to be miserable; being healthy is fun! I’m a fan of fashion and fitness because I love looking and feeling good but I also love board games and Doctor Who. Yes – you can look hot and be nerdy! It’s true! Also, my favorite color is teal and my birthday is in July so you’ve been given fair time to get me something really good this year."

1.) I've heard from many people that they feel overwhelmed in regard to fitness and health. what advice would you give someone who doesn't know where to (or how to) begin when it comes to working out and eating healthy?

      1. Acknowledge that it is overwhelming. I am a part of the fitness industry and I still find it all overwhelming at times. Eat this; not that. Do this; not that. Try this; not that. There’s so much information out there that it can be really daunting. Do your research to find what works for you.

2. Take baby steps. 99% of people can’t handle a whole sweeping life change so try to make small changes over time instead of doing it all at once. Start incorporating exercise one week, add more fruits and veggies the next, lessen your intake of processed foods the next. Taking the time to incorporate each part of a healthy life one at a time will make it easier for you to stick with.

3. Big goals are great but they can be discouraging too. Set a big goal and set various small goals leading up to it. Say you have 100 pounds to lose: if you don’t celebrate the smaller goals (like every 10 pounds lost which is still awesome!) you can feel like you’re not getting there fast enough. Smaller goals give you the opportunity to celebrate and acknowledge your accomplishments.

4.Ultimately remember that you didn’t wake up one morning 20 pounds overweight and out of shape. It happened over time. Creating a healthy life and seeing progress will take time too. Don’t get discouraged.

2.) Stereotypically, nerds are portrayed as being surrounded by their weight in chips and mountain dew. What are your healthy snack and drink suggestions for people during those marathon gaming sessions?

If possible, get a couple of your engineering friends over and build this : Treadmills used to play WoW

Not possible? Okay fine. For the marathon sesh it’s important that the snacks don’t need to be refrigerated or can sit out for a while without getting nasty. Here’s my top picks:

Drink:
water – add fruit if  you’re so inclined or get carbonated water if you’re really craving soda
tea

Food:
All natural air-popped popcorn (not microwave)
mixed nuts (look for a mix that is less than 50% peanuts)
rice cakes
apples
edamame
sunflower seeds
chia seeds
raw, fresh veggies

3.) What are your thoughts on the recent "exer-gaming" trend? (e.g. Wii-Fit games and the Microsoft Kinect) Do you think it can be an effective form of exercise?
Source: Buzzle.com

"Love it! With each new console comes a new, more involved way to get physical while working out. It’s a great way to incorporate movement into an otherwise sedentary hobby.
I think these absolutely can provide effective exercise. I’ve done workouts using both the Wii and Kinect and have got my sweat on during both. I would definitely recommend the Kinect over the Wii because it allows freedom from the controller and the ability to truly move but they both offer games that will get you up and sweating.
The more activity the better so if you can get up and moving outside of video gaming (whether it’s an active game or not) is fantastic; but something is better than nothing so if that is all you can fit in then it’s a great place to start (next step, getting outside).
Whatever you’re doing, work hard. If you choose to work out using a video game or a treadmill, remember to always keep the intensity up to get the most out of your workouts. If you finish a workout and think “Wow, that was easy” then you need a newer and/or more challenging workout. Step it up and don’t be afraid to challenge yourself. You might surprise yourself. "
